What was Jersey COW’s role in the project?
Jersey Cow was responsible for creating the student software client application, using Flash, which passed user data to and from the server application via XML. Jersey Cow also acted as an integration hub for the development efforts of a complex distributed team (PREL asset production in Hawaii; Scholastic editorial, in-house graphic design, and content vendors; Tom Snyder back end; Recommended Test Labs and other internal QA groups). COW’s development partnership with Scholastic spanned the full life-cycle of the Zip Zoom commercial product emergence, beginning with due-diligence analysis of the legacy research product (code, assets, and infrastructure), and culminating with a Gold Master CD-Rom that reflected the pedagogic functional and design upgrades identified by Scholastic as critical to success in the K-3 education market (in addition to several marketing demos, sampler, and simulation pieces). COW remains a committed maintenance and development partner for Zip Zoom English as its successful product life cycle continues to unfold.

What is Zip Zoom English(TM)?
The Zip Zoom product suite includes a whole range of supplemental learning and teaching materials, at the heart of which is powerful software that engages students in critical language and reading practice. Interactive visual and auditory support scaffolds the learning for English-Language Learners and keeps them motivated and focused on developing essential English skills. The content scope of the student software spans multiple levels, organized by research-vetted spiral progression in theme, skill, and language proficiency. The product offers more than 350 engaging activities, interactive books, songs, and non-threatening assessment activities. One of the key upgrades to the commercial product was an assessment-driven remediation capacity to facilitate a fluid review channel for students in need of more time and exposure with instructional content before moving on in the program. Another key upgrade allows teachers to use product controls to place and re-place students within the program according to aptitude and individualized learning pace. An upgraded navigation architecture will also support future product versions that grant teachers and administrators an even greater ability to tailor their students’ instructional path through the program via product controls.
